The first truck using LNG in the ENAP fleet has started operating, marking a new milestone in its commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable national energy matrix. The vehicle is more efficient, emits less noise and 15% less greenhouse gases than similar vehicles running on diesel.
The vehicle, manufactured by Italian company Iveco and operated by Transportes Santa María and Cryolab, departed from the Quintero GNL terminal for the first time for refueling under strict safety measures. The truck travelled about 1,600 km to reach ENAP’s regasification plant in Pemuco, where the delivered gas will be injected into the Concepción network.
“This is an excellent example from the ENAP team showing what creativity and innovation can do,” said Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet.
"We want to promote a more environmentally friendly energy matrix. This truck consumes LNG, which pollutes little. It has high autonomy and is much quieter, improving people's quality of life and making driving more pleasant... It is a great example that we can invest and improve operational efficiency while protecting the environment. The government is committed to moving towards a cleaner matrix, especially cleaning up the transport sector, which is one of the most complex."
Andrés Roccatagliata, ENAP's general manager, also commented: "As the main public company in the country's fuel supply, we are setting an example and innovating to move to more environmentally friendly technologies. We are happy to present the first 100% LNG truck in our fleet."
The executive stressed that the goal of the state company is "not to stop at this pilot experience, but to inspire the rest of the companies, the rest of the fleet, the rest of the trucks, so that all of us work on this technology. It is reasonable."
In fact, this truck is part of a project developed by the Gas and Energy Department of ENAP, which aims to install LNG as an alternative fuel for road freight and public transportation.
Currently, the state-owned company has a fleet of 94 trucks that travel about 18 million kilometers per year between different facilities and serve major customers to guarantee the supply of fuel to the country.
Based on the results of the first trips of LNG trucks, the company can start the process of gradually converting its vehicles, taking advantage of the economic and environmental advantages that LNG offers for road freight transport.
